Nicky's Top Safety Tips for Running at Night

Next

There's something special about running at night that makes it distinctly different from running during the day. The darkness envelops you, but the world is not completely silent. The cool air brushes against your face, making you feel alive and invigorated. It's an exhilarating experience that every runner should try at least once.

1 - Vary your route to stay safe

If you will be running regularly at night time, vary your route and vary the time tha you go out. You don’t want to be stalked by someone who has picked up on your routine.

2 - Ensure you are visible

Remember to wear high-visibility clothing to make sure you are seen. You can check out FLANCI's reflective range for both men and women. Also, make sure to bring a reliable head torch that is fully charged. This will prevent you from running out of battery few miles away from home, and help you see potential hazards like potholes.

3 - Share your route

Share your running route with a friend or partner and provide them with your estimated time of return. Consider using a location-sharing app.

4 - Be alert!

It is not advisable to use headphones or engage in any activity that would distract you while running at night. You should remain fully alert and aware of your surroundings.

5 - Your ICE

Carry your phone with you. It is important to have an ICE (in case of emergency) contact saved on your phone.

6 - Stay in well lit areas

It is safer to run in well-lit areas with good paths, especially when running alone. Save nighttime trails for when you have company, in case you fall and get injured.

7 - Cars

Always run against the traffic so you can see the cars approaching you.

8 - Cash

Carry some cash. You never know when you will need it.

9 - Safety blanket

It is recommended to carry an emergency foil blanket in your bag or pocket as it takes up no space, has no weight, and could be very useful in case of an accident. I always keep one in my ultra vest, throughout the year.

10 - Have fun

Running at night is a completely different experience so enjoy it!
